    Since its opening in 1952, Shriners Hospitals for Children, Los Angeles has provided orthopaedic and post-burn treatment for over 27,000 children.  In 1985, the hospital was completely rebuilt and rededicated.  In 1998, another reconstruction phase was completed that expanded the Outpatient Clinic, Medical Records and cafeteria.  Needed office space was redesigned and rebuilt.  Today, it stands as an exemplary facility featuring the finest in orthopaedic and burn injury medical services that can be found in the world, all in a striking, non hospital-like atmosphere.
 
    The Los Angeles hospital is a pediatric facility featuring 60 patient beds, and is fully accredited by the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Health Care Organizations.  Quality hospital and medical care is provided FREE OF CHARGE to patients and families.

    Funds to support Shriners Hospitals come from gifts, bequests and income from an endowment fund.  No payment or insurance of any kind is accepted, nor does the hospital accept government grants, state or other agency funding.

    The first Shriners Hospital opened in 1922, and has been dedicated to helping children with special needs ever since.  Shriners Hospitals for Children, Los Angeles, is part of the Shriners Hospitals for Children  System headquarted in Tampa, Florida.  Shriners Hospitals is an international system of medical and surgical care consisting of nineteen orthopaedic hospitals and four acute burn hospitals.

    Each of the Shriners Hospitals have a different geographic service area.  The Los Angeles Hospital serves Southern California, Arizona, Southern Nevada, New Mexico and Mexico.

    The Los Angeles hospital features two major surgical suites and an Outpatient Clinic serving over 1,200 patients per month.  Our staff is our best resource.  We have over 280 full and part time employees, including a compliment of 43 physicians and 80 nurses.  We also have over 500 active volunteers.

    To support families of our hospitalized patients, we have four guest rooms. We also possess laundry facilities for parents and patients to use during their stay.

    The building also features an auditorium equipped with the latest audio/visual equipment; a multi-purpose 2-story Atrium facility; 3.5 levels of subterranean parking; an a rooftop playground with a park like setting.

    Treatment:  At Shriners Hospitals for Children, Los Angeles, specialists in the field of pediatric orthopaedic and burn reconstruction, treat the child, not only their physical ailments.  All stakk are committed to providing quality health care to our patients and their families.

    Research:  The medical staff is involved in a number of research projects that aim to better the lives of children with burns and orthopaedic conditions.

    Education:  Shriners Hospitals for Children, Los Angeles, maintains teaching affiliations with University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Harbor UCLA to train residents in pediatric orthopaedic surgery.

    Physical & Occupational Therapy: Physical and occupational therapies assist the patient in achieving and maintaining their maximum functional level.

    Child Life & Recreation Therapy: Recreation Therapy/Child Life staff prepare patients and families for surgery with pre-operative teaching and medical play.  We provide activities and outings into the community to enhance patients' social interaction shills. Some special activities include burncamp and Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis camp.

    Child Amputrr Prosthetics Project (CAPP): A 1988 addition the Shriners Hospitals for Children, Los Angeles is CAPP.  The CAPP program's purpose is to provide child amputees with both state-of-the-art prostheses and total rehabilition, including design, fabrication and training in use of the device, plus psycho-social counseling.

    On-Site Public School:  LA Unified School Distric offers two classrooms for patients in grades K - 12.  Bilingual classes are taught by certified teachers and aids.

    Patient & Family Services:  Clinical social workers provide therapeutic interventions to patients and their families to enhance their abilities to cope and adjust to their medical condition, hospitalization and treatment.  Among the services provided are: psychosocial assessments, individualized counseling, educational and support groups, information, community referrals and advocacy.

    Indoor hydro-therapy pool:  Our hospital features a swimming pool which is used for therapy.  Range of motion exercises and patient comfort are greatly enhanced by the warm water.

How you can get involved and help Shriners Hospitals for Children

There are many ways for you to become a part of Shriners Hospitals for Children, Los Angeles.  We welcomeideas to promote our hospital, identify new patients, and provide activities for our patients.

Volunteer Services:  Volunteers assist in nearly every hospital department from the cafeteria to the clinics.  New volunteers are always welcome!

Hospital Tours:  Tours are available seven days a week for groups and individuals by appointment.

Speakers Bureau:  Hospital professionals are available to speak to community groups, service and professional organizations on a variety of topics.

Community & Health Fairs:  The Public Relations Department will coordinate a booth about Shriners Hospitals at community and health fairs.

Donations:  Shriners Hospitals for Children have a number of giving programs.  All donations support the Endowment Fund, which finances all 22 Shriners Hospitals.
