The Al Bahr Samaritan Drivers
Club was chartered on June 19, 1996, by Potentate Paul Robison. Fred
Wright was
the founding president and Bill Newhall the founding Secretary. The
initial roster shows that 62 members of Al Bahr were
charter members of the club. Today there are more than 38 active members.
The purpose of this organization is to
transport patients from San Diego to our Shriners Hospital in Los Angeles.
It is the operational force of our Hospital
Committee and is composed of drivers, shotguns and interpreters. The only
requirement for membership is that the noble be a
member in good standing of Al Bahr. During the 10 year
period from 1996 through 2005, the Club has transported by vans
over 15,840 patients and over 15,320 adults to the Los Angeles Shriners
Hospital. During the same period, 3,083 van trips
were made to Los Angeles with 88,858 Samaritan man hours expended. The
normal day for the Samaritan starts
at 4:30 a.m., departing Al Bahr at 5:45 a.m., San Ysidro at 6:15 a.m., a stop in
Oceanside and arrival at the hospital at 9:15.
The day is spent at the hospital with return to San Diego in the afternoon with
arrival at Al Bahr around 5:30 p.m.
That makes a great 13 hour day for performing our duty to get kids to the
hospital. We feel that this is what being a
SHRINER is all about!
